5th Annual Dinner Dance Extravaganza - 2009
R.A.M.P. would like
to thank everyone who attended the dinner dance held at
the Doubletree Hotel on November 21, 2009. Kudos goes to
our guest speaker William A. Johnson for the wonderful
job of speaking on "Reaching Your Dreams Through
Education."
With your attendance the event was a great success for
the George H. Cooper Scholarship fund. Again, thanks to
each and everyone of you.
Hoping to see you at many more functions hosted by Rochester Association of Minority Police.
RAMP Mixer - 2008
RAMP would like to thank everyone who
attended the December mixer held at Julius Cafe. We
appreciate your continued support. It was
wonderful to see old and new faces. RAMP truly looks
forward to seeing everyone at future meetings and
events. Our applauds to the chefs at Julius Cafe who
prepared the delicious dishes.
Deputy George H. Cooper - The Way We Were
On a dreary October
afternoon recently, I arrived at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. George H. Cooper and sitting at the kitchen table,
I had the honor of interviewing a true trailblazer and
an important part of our agency history. You see, George
Cooper, 81 is the first African-American hired as a
Deputy Sheriff in the Monroe County Sheriff's Office in
1951.
After serving in the
military, George was happy to be working at
Stromberg-Carlson yet his father had other plans for his
twenty-four year old son. The elder Mr. Cooper was a
prominent barber in Rochester and was very involved in
local politics.
